Edward Harbert became employed as an "Indian Spy" with the Virginia militia. Edward was a shiftless sort of man. From two marriages he had seven children. He was summoned to court several times around 1805 to 1807 to show cause why the Overseers of the Poor should not indenture his children. Indentured children were bound into the service of citizens who would care for them and teach them their trade.
