Tech TV hosts visit St. Louis

February 3, 2001

When I heard that Tech TV hosts Leo Laporte and Patrick Norton were traveling to St. Louis to for a meet and greet at a Comp Usa store, I knew I wanted to go!

On Saturday morning. February 3, 2001, our doggies jumped into our van and we were on our way to St. Louis.    After a couple dog walk stops (not always in the ideal neighborhood)  and discovering that Yahoo maps do not always give ideal directions, we finally found the CompUsa store.  We arrived about 12:30pm and the event was scheduled to last until 2pm.

We were a bit nervous when we saw the full parking lot at Comp Usa, but we remembered that the Pet Superstore across the street also had a full lot.  (Was Murray from Mad About You there?)    The line went around the CompUsa store, out the door and all the way down the block to the end of the Toys R Us.   There was a nice lady at Toys R Us who apparently gave everyone the wrong directions to the rest rooms.

The Tech TV film crew came out and asked people inline questions about their channel.   At one point, they walked down the line with the camera running and had us state where we were from.   I wonder if I´ll see myself on tv....

The camera crew found someone who had traveled from New Jersey for the event and interviewed him.

Leo and Patrick were at a desk near the front of the store. Each person would be introduced to them by name and they would pose for photos, sign autographs and chat for a bit.

We were encouraged to bring something to be autographed.  People brought old technology books, hard drives, pc covers, laptops and a big Linux penguin!  You can click on the photo of the laptop to see what they wrote.

The local tv news was there to report on this event.  The cameraman said he would´ve been there anyway, because he is a fan of the show.

Around 2:30pm they left the desk and walked the line to greet the fans, sign photos and pose for photos.  They made sure that everyone in line got to say Hi!

Patrick posed for a photo for me.  I also had my pic taken with Leo & Patrick, but for some reason, they´re in focus and I´m not, so I edited myself out of the image.   That´s the first photo on the page.

They even signed photos for people as they left the store.

Here´s Leo climbing into the limo.  I noticed that the other photos page caught this same moment from a different angle.   I hope Leo will forgive us!

Hey, I see that someone sent in this limo photo to the Screensavers. It was the fridge magnet photo for February 16th, 2001. I'm honored!

My thanks also to Leo for linking this page at www.Leoville.com. BTW, another visit to this same store is planned. Check Leoville for details.

FYI, for the St.Louis photos I used a Canon Sure Shot A-1 Camera, which I use a lot for jetskiing because it can go underwater. Leo's book was photographed with a Nikon Coolpix 950 Digital Camera.

After the event was over, we went to the nearby Pizzaria Uno´s (Chicago Style Pizza) for a late lunch.   The staff there was exhausted.  I´m guessing that a lot of Tech TV fans ALL went out for pizza after they were done at Comp Usa.   Next time, Tech TV should send a warning fax to the pizza places near their events so they can schedule accordingly.  Just an idea! :)

BTW, my local library found this book by Leo Laporte. There is a listing for it at Amazon.com. The book is titled 101 Computer Answers You Need to Know. Leo's latest book is TechTV Leo Laporte's 2003 Technology Almanac.

I hope you´ve enjoyed my photos here.  You´re invited to check out some of my other photo projects such as how compact discs are made at EMI manufacturing, a fireworks animation, photos from backstage at the Dove Awards, State Fair pics, bird photos and pet photos in a 3D spinning cube. If you're interested in digital photography, you might want to check out my Amazon listmania page titled: The Nikon Coolpix Digital Photographer's Needful Things.
