ABOUT ACL

Alabama Citizens for Life of Mobile, Inc., is the local chapter of Alabama Citizens for Life, the state affiliate of the well known and highly respected National Right to Life Committee, Inc. Alabama Citizens for Life is a statewide, nonsectarian, non-profit organization established to serve groups and individuals in Alabama who wish to effectively defend the most basic of all human rights -- the right to life. It is our belief that the protection of human life can be achieved only through a unified, statewide educational and legislative effort that is coordinated with an effective national program.

LOCAL EVENTS AND PROJECTS

Our 2002 Roe v. Wade Anniversary March

Please visit our web album of snapshots from events and projects.

LIST OF PERMANENT (ONGOING OR ANNUAL) PROJECTS:

CURRENT SPECIAL NEEDS FOR LOCAL PROJECTS:
  1. During sessions of the Alabama Legislature, letters, calls, e-mails, and visits to state legislators will be needed in support of pro-life bills. See below under State Legislative Alerts. Letters to editors, calls to radio talk shows, etc., will also be useful.

  2. Letters, calls, and e-mails are needed in response to Federal Legislative Alerts (see that section, below).

  3. Letters to the editor of local newspapers are very much needed on the general subjects of abortion and euthanasia, and on the subjects currently listed under Federal Legislative Alerts.

  4. We often need signatures and help circulating petitions; one current example opposes human cloning. (The recent NRLC petition against Partial Birth Abortion is, for now, retired, thanks to its success in Congress and the White House. However, since federal courts have already issued injunctions against enforcement of the ban just passed, the hiatus may be short-lived. If the Supreme Court ultimately sees fit to overthrow the decision of the other two constitutional branches -- as it often does, we will be reviving this petition!)

  5. If it's December or January, help us with arrangements and publicity for our annual Roe V. Wade Anniversary Observance(s), always held on a Sunday (or Sundays) close to January 22.

  6. If it's September or October, we need help with arrangements for our Greater Gulf State Fair Booth and volunteers to man it.

  7. If it's April or May, we need help with the Carnation Sale, an annual fundraiser held on Mother's Day.

STATE EVENTS AND PROJECTS

Alabama Citizens for Life exists to restore legal protection for human life from conception through natural death. It serves as the state coordinating body for a network of concerned pro-life citizens. It is a non- profit organization composed of people of different political persuasions, various faiths, and diverse economic, social, and ethnic backgrounds, who are brought together by a common belief: That every human being has an inalienable right to life, a life that is precious and must be protected.

Alabama Citizens for Life conducts various on-going WORK AND PROJECTS, including DEVELOPING local ACL chapters to articulate the pro-life message on the local level; PUBLISHING ACL News, the state newsletter of Alabama Citizens for Life; PROVIDING pro-life interviews and information for newspapers, television and radio; DISTRIBUTING educational materials; PROMOTING programs and activities which increase respect for the worth and dignity of human life; LOBBYING in support of state and federal laws which protect human life; PREPARING and publishing candidate surveys on abortion.

Alabama Citizens for Life's mission is "working to restore legal protection for those members of our human family who are threatened by abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia." We invite and urge you to join us! It really is "a matter of CHOICE"! The CHOICE we have is clear: We must stand and fight for a philosophy of LIFE, or sit on the sidelines and surrender to a philosophy of DEATH!

It features constantly up-dated information on all federal pro-life issues; voting records; e-mail links to your representative and senators, plus full information on other methods of contact, all sorted by your zip code (!); lists of all candidates currently up for election at both national and state levels, again available by zip code (!) Use the following link to this magnificent web resource: http://capwiz.com/nrlc/home/ [We'll download the spiffy button furnished on the NRLC website sometime. "Be (the hyperlink) ever so humble," there's no place like this NRLC-LAC homepage!]

We will no longer post announcements on particular federal pro-life issues in this section, depending instead on the above link to the new Legislative Action Center, since it will be kept perpetually "current" on all topics. We will, however, continue to post here any necessary notes about Alabama's federal delegation or events in Alabama bearing on those issues. A Federal Contact Information section follows, for use when you wish to reach federal officials directly, rather than through the NRLC Legislative Action Center.

ABOUT NRLC//NATIONAL EVENTS AND PROJECTS

The National Right to Life Committee, Inc., is probably the most widely known and highly respected pro-life group in America today -- especially in Washington, D.C., where it maintains an office originally born to coordinate the local grassroots organizations that sprang up shortly before and after the infamous Roe vs. Wade decision. It has not forgotten its beginnings. It is unusual among national offices in being truly grassroots-oriented and controlled -- "bottom-up," rather than "top- down." It both provides feedback to and accepts feedback from the local pro- life groups that formed it.

It constantly monitors events in the United States Congress, the federal judiciary, and the executive offices, as well as non-governmental national institutions, for its local members. It also provides those local members a permanent, respected, and powerful lobbying presence in government and a unified voice addressing the national media. One of its most effective branches is its political action committee: NRL-PAC. The NRLC publishes roll call votes and yearly summaries; coordinates a national voter- identification program; and maintains its own pro-life legal branch, the National Right to Life General Counsel's office (often quoted by the media). It does its best to promote networking not only among its own local groups, but also among all non-violent pro-life groups and people, nationwide, accomplished partly through its special Outreach Department. It provides more services and contacts than can possibly be listed here!

It is equally involved in education of the general public regarding all issues that arise respecting abortion, infanticide, and euthanasia. Its National Right to Life News provides full and timely coverage of related events, debates, and research, not only for members but also for the general public through many schools, offices, and public libraries across the nation. Both current issues and an archive of the NRL News are available on the web at http://www.nrlc.org/news/index.h tml. Visit its site and keep yourself up to date! Subscription information and current federal legislative alerts are always available in its pages! CONTACT INFO FOR THE NRL NEWS IS

In colleges and high schools across the nation, the NRLC's special branches for young people are highly active. (Teens for Life has energy that often amazes us!) Other educational efforts include distribution of well written, reliable, accurate monographs, pamphlets, and reprints on a wide range of specific topics; provision of highly competent speakers; an annual national convention with an excellent array of up-to-the-minute workshops, programs, and general sessions; publicity supporting sister pro-life organizations; public relations work with major media; the Outreach Department, mentioned above, and more! It also extends its efforts worldwide through a burgeoning international association of right-to-life groups. It maintains a special Office of Education & Research. The National Right to Life Committee, Inc., has long proven itself a major force in spreading the pro-life philosophy and pro-life information.

IN ALL OF THESE EFFORTS, IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN RESOLUTELY SINGLE-ISSUE AND NON-VIOLENT. It takes no positions on any other political issues, and includes members of all political persuasions. It publicly and privately condemns violent actions, urging restraint. Its policy is to abide by current laws even while it seeks to change them.
