It was extremely rare for a man's wife or daughter to be counted as a taxable, but a few instances appeared in this list.
There was a total of 490 Entries, a grand total of 1244 taxables. The 1244 may be broken down into 577 white taxables and 667 black taxables (376 black males and 791 black females). Assuming that each entry represented a familg, with an average of six persons in each, the white population of Bladen County In 1763 was around 3,000. An estimated 7,000 Negroes would bring the grand total to near 5,000.
The 1790 Population of Bladen County was 5l00 (two-thirds white, One third black), but due to the formation of other counties Bladen was only about half the size it was in 1763. Present s1ze of Bladen is around one-third its size in 1763, and two-thirds its 1790 size. 1960 Population was 28,861.
This tax list is especially valuable in view of the fact that many of Bladenrs early records were destroyed by fires in 1769 and 1893.
The original 1763 tax list is on file in the State Department of Archives and History, Raleigh, North Carolina.
