(none confirmed, but one being a conversation an Arkansas Researcher, a cousin of mine in Stone County Arkansas recently had with a very elderly citizen).James and Mahala were married almost ten years before having children. Then, almost in succession,
their children were born with little time between them. It is rumored that the actual father of the children is Brown Calvin Robert MARTIN who was then married to James' sister, Mary Elizabeth (after a prior marriage to Disa Ann BRANSCUM). He was the
son of Isabell MARTIN who was half Native American (Cherokee).
The children were all born very dark complected with dark hair and eyes.
Mahala and the blonde-headed James were both fair complected.(These dark characteristics were carried down as recently as my father's generation-[John b.1936] The town surmised because of the appearance of the children the quarter-Cherokee Brown Martin
(who was very dark complected himself) was the father. The story continues, indicating that James could not bear children and an agreement was made between James, his wife Mahala, and Brown Martin that Brown would give her children.
NOTE: None of this has ever been confirmed and considering the time period-late 1800's Arkansas- probably never will. However, elderly relatives of my family are reluctant to speak AT ALL about this Brown Calvin Robert Martin.

markers. William's marker was the source for the initial "M".
Additionally, the 1880 Arkansas census shows his given name as
"Wilson".

She was known as "Vala". The 'r' at the end of Rosellar is, as many
sourcesw have listed, the correct spelling of her first name. Her husband,
Luther and her daughter, Irene, both listed, in their own handwriting, her
middle name as "ZaVala" and not Vala.
