WARRENS of Searcy and Stone Counties, Arkansas

1. Joseph W. WARREN born 1830,1 lived: Gibson County,
Tennessee, married 10 MAY 1854, in Gibson County,
Tennessee,2 Mary Elizer CARAWAY, born 05 AUG 1833, North

died 1922, Flag, Stone County, AR.3 Joseph died 1864,2
milit: Civil War.2 Joseph was lost in the Civil War as
a Confederate soldier. Mary: Mary is shown married to
John EDWARDS, her second husband, on the 1880 census for
Faulkner County, Arkansas. Folklore says that John went
into the woods one day, to work, and was never heard
   from again.
           Children:
                      i John WARREN born Tennessee,2
                      lived: Tennessee.2
                 2. ii James William WARREN born 29 JUN
                     1855.

Second Generation

2. James William WARREN born 29 JUN 1855, Greenfield,
   Tennessee,3 lived: Tennessee/Arkansas,1 occupation
   Baptist Minister/Property,4 married 05 SEP 1875, in
Gibson Co., Tennessee,2 Mary Francis KEITHLEY, born 27
SEP 1858, Dyer Co., Tennessee,1 lived:
   Tennessee/Arkansas, (daughter of Bryant "Branch"
KEATHLEY and Minerva BARNES) died 1933, Flag, Stone
County, AR.1 James died 25 DEC 1920, Flag, Stone
County, AR.5 ---From: "Yellar Rag Boys",S.L.Weaver,
   (1992, Arkansas):

James moved to the Stone County area of Arkansas c. 1880
with his wife, (Mary), his recently widowed mother, Mary
Elizer, and brother, John Brint WARREN. They left Dyer,
Gibson County, Tennessee by covered wagon and settled at
Flag. John soon moved to Missouri-he lived in Haiyti.
Later James relocated the family to Oxley in Stone
County. They eventually moved back to Flag, to a large
log cabin set on 200 acres of farmland. The only
reported visitor the family had from their home state,
Tennessee, was Arch Bryant 'KEATHLEY', Mary's brother.
James rode horseback two days to recieve Arch at the
train station in Sylamore, then both journeyed two days
back to the WARREN home. After these trips, which were
repeated to get Arch back to the train after his visit,
Arch said he would never be back. (He did, however,
later return with his son, Coy in 1928). ("Yellar Rag
   Boys", S.L.Weaver, 1992, AR).

*There is no death record on file for James W. WARREN in
the state of Arkansas. His date of death may be in
error. Mary: The surname KEITHLEY is spelled 'KEATHLEY'
among Mary's ancestors, as recent as her own parents.
Many documents I have obtained - Luther (son of mary)
Elgin WARREN's death certificate, social security
application form, Mary Lou Branscum's text, "Branscums
and Related Families of Stone County, Arkansas", etc.
list Mary's name spelled 'KEITHLEY'. (Luther listed her
as KEITHLEY in his own handwriting on his social
security application). This needs furthur evaluation.

Third Generation

3. Luther Elgin WARREN born 28 MAY 1883, Mayflower,
   Arkansas,4 lived: Arkansas/Oklahoma, occupation
   Printer/Writer/Educator, married 31 MAY 1903, in Stone
County, Arkansas,6 Rosellar Vala BRANSCUM, born 03 NOV
1883, Searcy Co., AR,7 lived: Arkansas, (daughter of
James W BRANSCUM and Mahala Jane STEPHENSON) died 03 FEB
1964, Searcy Co., AR,8 buried: 1964, Marshall Cemetery,
Searcy Co., AR.5 Luther died 02 JUL 1958, Marshall,
Searcy Co., AR,5 buried: 1958, Harness, Stone Co., AR.5
After marrying Vala, Luther and his family lived in
Timbo. In 1908, they lived near Jimmie's Creek in Searcy
County, and Luther became postmaster. In 1911, as a
resident of Leslie, Searcy County, he wrote for the
local newspaper, the "Leslie Banner". He also wrote for
the local paper after the family settled in Marshall, a
few years later. He paid his way through school and
learned the linotype machine. After attending the
Marshall Academy, he earned his degree at the Teaching
Institute in Mountain View, and taught for many years.
He held the same educational ideals for his children.
About 1926, Luther made his way to Tulsa, Oklahoma,
working almost 27 years for the Tulsa Tribune and Tulsa
World as a columnist and printer. Having a bit of wit
about him, he wrote a column called "Twisted Tales".
Luther retired back to the Marshall, Arkansas home in
1949, where he spent his later years studying the civil
war, squirrell hunting, and doing crossword puzzles.
(from "Yellar Rag Boys", S.L. WEAVER, 1992, AR).
Rosellar: She was known as "Vala". The 'r' at the end of
Rosellar is, as many sources have listed, the correct
spelling of her first name. Her husband, Luther and her
daughter, Irene, both listed, in their own handwriting,
her middle name as "ZaVala" and not Vala. Cannot locate
   death record for Vala.
