BYELORUSSIA: GENOCIDE OF A NATION
by Art Turevich
Since its loss of independence to imperial Russia at the end of the 18th century, BYELORUSSIA
has been subjected to a ruthless and brutal denationalization which continues to this day.
Beginning under the tsars, the country's name, language, culture and history have been
repressed. Physical destruction has also occurred, including the tragedies at Kurapaty (under
Stalin) and Chernobyl (under Gorbachev).
The events related to Chernobyl and Kurapaty are subject of this two part article. These events,
though separate and seemingly unrelated, have something in common - their end result:
physical destruction in the Byelorussian nation, one by circumstance, the other by design.
Part I of this article, 'Chernobyl: Byelorussian Tragedy' is presented in this Issue, and Part II,
'Kurapaty: Byelorussian Holocaust,' will appear in the next issue.
