Axel Christiansen immigrated to the US through Ellis Island in 1901. The inspector changed the spelling of his name from Kristiansen to Christiansen. However, years before his ancestors used the standard Scandinavian tradition of christening with a given name and assuming the surname of the father's given name plus a suffix which was determined by the sex of the child. For example, when Kristian Ask had a son, he named his son Kristiansen and when he had a daughter he named her Kristiandtr.
