THE CHESS SET

This series of etchings, using chess images and hidden chess positions, was first shown at the Triton Museum of Art, Santa Clara, CA in Dec. 1976, and was the subject of a cover story in the March 1979 issue of Chess Life Magazine. "Pawn Pun" was featured on the cover.

"Checkmate" & "King Pin" can be visualized as chess positions.

In "Checkmate" the White Queen (on the King's lap) has checkmated the Black King. He cannot move to either side since those files are held by the two White Rooks. He cannot take the Queen because she is protected by the two White Knights.

In "King Pin" the Black Bishop (on the King's lap) is pinned against his King by the White Rook, while the four white pawns go forward.

"Game of the Century" is a full board chess position from the 1956 U.S. Championship game between Donald Byrne and Bobby Fischer, age 13 at the time.  The etching depicts move #17 in which Fischer sacrificed his Queen with ...B-K3!! and won the game.

"Jeté" is a full board chess position, inspired by a real tournament game played in 1974.  Nona Gaprindisvili, playing white, won the game against Servaty with her 17th move, depicted in this etching staged as a ballet.  A copy of the moves of this game accompanies each print.
