Common Ball Screw Problems

Symptom: Screw is slightly out of tolerance. Runs a little rough. May be slightly bent.

Solution: Straighten screw. New balls. New tubes. Make new custom nylon wipers. Re-pack and adjust preload.

Symptom: All symptoms of the above, PLUS the screw is extremely out of tolerance.

Solution: All of the repair procedures for the above, plus you will need a screw and nut regrind, from minor (dust grind) to major regrind.

Symptom: All symptoms of the above, PLUS damaged journal ends.

Solution: All repairs done above, plus a chrome and grind on the journals.

Symptom: Symptoms present are a combination of all of the above, PLUS the nut is beyond economical repair (B.E.R.).

Solution: Procedures and repairs performed in all of the above, plus fabrication of a new nut may be needed.

Symptom: Entire screw is beyond economical repair generally because a regrind would penetrate into the case hardening.

Solution: You need to have an entire new ballscrew assembly manufactured. It may be possible to quick fix your old ballscrew to keep your machine operating while a new ballscrew is being manufactured.

Check for:
1. Bent Screw.
2. Alignment of screw in relation to journals.
3. Alignment of screw in relation to nut housing.
4. Alignment of screw in relation to slides, gibs, and roller cages.

Improper lubrication can cause poor running and high wear.
Check for:
1. Proper maintenance of machine lubrication system.
2. Correct type of lubricant (follow manufacturer's (recommendations).
3. Make sure lubricant is clean.
4. Remember synthetic lubricants can cause varnish deposits.
5. DO NOT USE GRAPHITE BASED LUBRICANTS.
6. Dirty environments can cause poor running and high wear.

1. Make sure proper wipers are installed and in good working condition.
2. Consider installing a bellow type protective cover.
3. Consider lubrication system filters or strainers.
4. Check coolants for rust and gum content.
5. Be careful with soaps and high pressure cleaning so that lubricants are not washed away.


1. Lubricate and rotate nuts periodically.
2. Keep screws protected with tubular plastic sheeting.
3. Hang ball screws vertically to keep them straight.
4. Keep units from excessive vibration.
5. Be aware of the following potential problems.

CHUCK REBUILDING


STEP 1:
A damaged or worn lathe chuck arriving at ESCO is first disassembled and thoroughly cleaned. Each part, body way, master jaw and wedge fit is inspected and measured in 10ths to determine damage and wear, then reassembled. Following theprocess, a quotation is submitted and work can begin process, a quotation is submitted and work can begin.

STEP 2:
During repair/rebuild, the lathe chuck manufacturer's original specifications are adhered to. Components are brought back to specifications equal to or better than new chuck. Body ways are ground perpendicular, parallel and square typical to one another. Jaws are fit to within .0005" and wedge fit to body bore to .001".

STEP 3:
ESCO is often able to repair chucks using existing parts. This saves downtime and money. When necessary, broken parts can be replaced or made. This applies to recently manufactured chucks, as well as older chucks that are no longer on the market

STEP 4:
