About the Eat the Scroll Ministry
In 1990, Michael P. Howard founded Eat the Scroll Ministry (ETS). He received the inspiration for ETS Ministry from studying the calling of the prophet Ezekiel. God told the prophet, "Eat the Scroll" and Ezekiel's response was, "...I ate it and it was sweet as honey" (Ez. 3:1). ETS Ministry is a Washington, DC based Christian group. It's mission is, "to educate, evangelize and to encourage and develop leadership among God's people, by sharing our history, culture and spirituality as African American Christians" (From ETS Mission Statement).
ETS Ministry has produced three publications, Hallelujah People, a daily reflection on the gospels according to the Catholic Lectionary. This booklet mirrors the gospel stories to our everyday life. The stories are about how we encounter God, a Hallelujah moment in our souls. A moment when we lift up our hands and say, "Thank you, Jesus! It could have been the other way." $18.00 for subcription. Our second booklet entitled Preparing for the Coming of Christ, a prayer booklet, a journal and scripture booklet, three in one! Makes for easy studying of God's Holy Word. The prayers in this booklet, recorded in the creative language of our Ancestor's which included metaphors and symbols to call on God. Narratives and testimonies were used as resources to try and capture this profound praying spirit. Our ancestors systematically incorporated a freedom beyond chains, beyond Jim Crow, beyond the KKK and other devices that were used to chain the African spirit. Our Black brothers and sisters prayed extemporaneously to bring spontaneity alive to ignite the community. Comprised in their discourse with their liberating God were recursive thoughts and a language of rhythm termed "call and response." This was their foundational prayer life. $3.00 per book. Then their is Zawadi Saba - A Scriptural Guide through the Seven Principles of Kwanzaa, a book designed for those who are committed to living the Nugzo Saba (seven principles) during the year. This book has several scriptural reflections associated with each Nugzo Saba. These reflections are as timeless as the scriptures. Readers will be able to use this booklet to plan celebrations for Black History Month, youth retreats, prayer services, Juneteenth, Black Catholic History Month, etc. By Imani (faith), the writers used their Kuumba (creativity) spirit recognizing the Nia (purpose) that this book can serve in its community. Using Umoja (unity), they have prayed that their efforts will continue the great work of Dr. Maulana Karenga, the founder of the seven principles. $20.00 per book. Click here to print an order form.
And he said to me, 'Son of man,
eat what is before you, eat this scroll; then go and speak to the house of
Israel.' So I opened my mouth, and he gave me the scroll to eat. Then he
said to me, 'Son of man, eat this scroll I am giving you and fill your stomach
with it.' So I ate it, and it tasted as sweet as honey in my mouth" (Ezekiel
3:1-3).
