Places of Interest
The city of Uzhgorod was mentioned in the ancient chronicles as early as in the 9th century. As in most ancient cities, the city tour starts from the castle in the center. Slav Prince Laborets lived there until his murder in 903 by invading Hungarians. The castle as it stands today has a 16th century facade. The Museum of Local History is now inside the castle. Since the city is not very big, the visit to the museum is usually included in the city tour (also the local open-air Museum of Traditional Rural Architecture can be included). Though there are only few more sites of old architecture in the city, it has a distinctive atmosphere of its own. Due to this, roaming its streets, trying various dishes of Hungarian, Slovak and local cuisine, drinking perfect Uzhgorod coffee (espresso) is a pleasant experience.
