Downloading databases

The Italian WLD and MTC databases are available on these peer-to-peer file sharing networks: Gnutella2, Gnutella, and eDonkey2000. To connect to one of these networks you need a p2p client program. There are many of these to choose from. The one I use is called Shareaza. It is free, has lots of features, and works well.  You can find Shareaza here. Another popular and free p2p client program is eMule. If you install one of these programs, you will probably need to configure your firewall and router to allow communication on a specific port number, so pay attention to the setup instructions.

The databases are broken up into several zip files. You have the option to use only the 7-piece files, the 7-piece files plus the part1 of the 8-piece files, or all three. Part1 of the 8-piece files is the most useful half. It contains positions where the majority of the pieces are men. Part 2 contains positions where the majority are kings. I recommend that you download both 8-piece parts. You will certainly need both parts to use the 8-piece mtc database. To use the 8-piece files, you also need the '7-piece' files, which contains data for position from 2 pieces through 7 pieces.

To find the files on a p2p network, use your p2p client's search feature to search for the filenames listed below. Depending on your p2p client, it may also be possible to start a download using one of the links in the table.

After you have downloaded the zip files, please consider leaving them in a directory where your p2p client will allow others to upload them from you, and leave your client running. This will take some of the load off of my internet connection and allow others to download the databases more quickly. With most p2p clients the files will be shared if you leave them in the directory they were downloaded into.

Web download of WLD db, 2-6 pieces:

A relatively small WLD db for 2 through 6 pieces is available here on my web server. This is a 30mb zip file. Unzip the files into a directory named \kr_ital_wld (you can create this directory with WinZip as you unzip the files), then configure KingsRow to use the database as described on the Italian KingsRow page. KingsRow will not play as strongly using only these files, but it will be much better than using no endgame db at all. Note: you don't need these files if you download the larger db files from the p2p file sharing network or if you obtain a database on DVDs.
