FeAudrey's Recommended Sites for Newbie Web-Builders

new The demise of AS has left the local sites in the first paragraph homeless. I will update the links as new addresses become available.

AncientSites now has a board, Arachne, devoted to page design, HTML, graphics, Java, and related topics (now with, thanks to Kathi_Hipocrates, an Arachne FAQ). You may also consult Ancient Sites Official Help Page, expecially helpful for file management and upload questions (always reachable by clicking on the "?" button on the AS edit page).

Take an interactive HTML tutorial. This site not only explains the basic coding, it lets you key it in and shows you the results. Very cool. (Note: start with Chapter 1, not Chapter 0)

Download my copy-and-paste HTML tags (slightly updated September 10) reference file (includes a color sampler). Please feel free to tell me if it is useful and how it may be made more so.

A classicist should be familiar with mythology. Before you copy, study the Ten Myths About Copyright.

DominHTML is my favorite HTML Editor (the freeware edition is fine, and its pay version is modestly priced).

If you want to put together something quickly, a Page Engine will do most of the boilerplate for you.Web Wizard is a good one, and a freebie.

LView is the image editing tool I use the most (again, freebie and shareware versions). Various users have written support pages with general information , and with specific intructions on making transparent images.

If you want to pretty up your page, go shopping in a directory of freebie graphics links. From the same source, some very sound page design advice.

newThe Net Mechanic is an excellent source for more advanced material, including freebie page-checking tools .
