New York before 1664 was Dutch-speaking Nieuw Amsterdam, and the 2 CONT French-speaking Calvinists or Huguenots who accompanied the Dutch to the New 2 CONT World began to have their names spelled many different ways, but usually dic- 2 CONT tated by the English-speaking clerks who spelled names as they heard them. 2 CONT The British pronunciation of pall-mall ("pell-mell") and Derby ("Darby) can 2 CONT suggest how the name of Merlet (originally Marle or a diminutive or Merle or 2 CONT its diminutive) came to be pronounced "MAR-LETT" by the English-speaking 2 CONT neighbors of Gedeon Merlet or Marlett of Staten Island and New Jersey. The 2 CONT connection between the two names MARLE and MERLE, and later Marlett, Marlatt, 2 CONT and Mellott, can be traced back to French language and custom. For example, 2 CONT the arms of the MARLOT family of Champagne show three "MERLETTES" (martlets). 2 CONT Thus the merlette was the symbol in battle for the family named Marlot. The 2 CONT French suffixes frequently changed to suggest a certain branch of the family. 2 CONT Both names may have been used interchangeably, but the English would definitely 2 CONT have prounced the spelling Merlet as MAR-LETT. I believe this is why so many 2 CONT of Gedeon's descendants maintained that spelling. John Peter, evidently, 2 CONT dropped the "r" and was frequently referred to as John Peterson Melot, Mellat, 2 CONT or Mallat. Theodore's 1694 baptismal record shows the spelling MELOT, which 2 CONT became Mellott among his son John Mellott's descendants, mainly in Pennsylvania. 2 CONT Theodore himself signed his name MALOT, whereas most of his second wife's 2 CONT (Catherine de la Chaumette or Delashmutt) children carried on the Malott 2 CONT spelling. 2 CONT 2 CONT Source: In Leyden, Holland, in the Records of the Church of Leide, exist the 2 CONT following records for Gedeon Merlette/Merlet/Marlet. 2 CONT "Received into the membership of the Church of Leide, Decemeber, 1643, 2 CONT Merlette, Gedeon, "surnomme La Plante" (nicknamed La Plante), according 2 CONT to the records of the Church of Ter Gouda". 2 CONT "Received as member of the Church of Leide December, 1651, 2 CONT Merlet, Gedeon, and Marguerite his wife, according to the records of 2 CONT Paris." 2 CONT "Baptized in the Church of Mannheim the 7th of February, 1656, 2 CONT Merlette, Abraham, son of Gedeon and Marguerite Martin." 2 CONT "Baptized in the Church of Mannheim (The French Huguenot Church) May 2, 1658 2 CONT Merlet, Jean Pierre, son of Gedeon and Marguerite Martin." 2 CONT "Member of the Church of Leide, 2 CONT Merlet, Gedeon, and his wife, part of the record of March 15, 1664." 2 CONT 2 CONT [Please note: Although Gedeon and Marguerite (Martin) Merlet had emigrated 2 CONT to New Amsterdam in 1662, while it was still in the control of the Dutch, they 2 CONT evidently were still considered members of the Church at Leyden, Holland.] 2 CONT 2 CONT !Betrothal: Wallon Church of Leyden, Holland, Betrothalbook N, p. 114: 2 CONT "Aenget. de Augusti 1644. 2 CONT Gedeon Merleth, timmerman, jongman van de Rousy, wonende op de 2 CONT Santestraet, vergesz. met Philip Merleth, sijn oom, wonende mede aldaer. 2 CONT met 2 CONT Margriet Martijn, jongedr. van Limborch, wonende op de Langegraft, 2 CONT vergesz. met Jenne Martijn, haer nicht, wonende mede aldaer." 2 CONT 2 CONT Translation is as follows: 2 CONT Entered August 6, 1644. 2 CONT Gedeon Merlet, a carpenter from Rousy, dwelling in "Sand Street", 2 CONT accompanied by Phillipe Merlet, his uncle, also living there. 2 CONT with 2 CONT Marguerite Martijn (Martin) from Limbourg, accompanied by Jenne (Jeanne) 2 CONT Martijn, her cousin, also living there. 2 CONT 2 CONT Gedeon Merlet and Maguerite Martijn (Martin) were married in the Walloon 2 CONT Church of Leyden on August 21, 1644. There are baptismal reccords there for 2 CONT their children on these dates: 2 CONT 2 CONT "September 17, 1645: Josias (Josue), son of Gedeon Merlette. The witnesses 2 CONT were Claude Marcy, Jean Martijn, Jeanne Martijn, and Clasinne Tertelim." 2 CONT 2 CONT "November 11, 1646: Marie, daughter of Gedeon Merlette. There two more 2 CONT sons were born and baptized, namely Abraham and Jean Pierre MERLET, 2 CONT MERLETTE, MARLETTE or MARLET. 2 CONT 2 CONT From the records of the French Huguenot Church of Mannheim, Germany: 2 CONT 2 CONT "On February 7, 1656, was baptized in the Church of Mannheim, Merlette, 2 CONT Abraham, son of Gedeon and Marguerite Martin." 2 CONT 2 CONT "On May 2, 1658 was baptized in the Church of Mannheim, Merlet, Jean 2 CONT Pierre, son of Gedeon and Marguerite Martin." 2 CONT 2 CONT Evidently the family returned to Holland between 1658 and 1662. They resumed 2 CONT their membership at the Walloon Church of Leyden. Gedeon and his uncle Philippe 2 CONT had been listed there in June, 1643 as having come from Gouda. This uncle 2 CONT may be the same person as the "Phillipe Merlet, born at "Crum", widower of 2 CONT Magdalena Gilbert," who married at Amsterdam on 12 October, 1647, "Jannete Pau, 2 CONT born at Sedan, a widow." If "Rousy" is Roucy in Champagne, it is interesting 2 CONT to note that there is a very old town called "Craon" not far away. 2 CONT When I was in Paris in 1988, I visited the French National Archives. In the 2 CONT section for documents concerning "fugitifs religionnaires" or those who were 2 CONT persecuted for their religious beliefs, I opened an old file containing a 2 CONT letter to the Count of Roucy and it was written about 1599. The letter 2 CONT discussed the Count's Calvinist religious beliefs and basically was a warning 2 CONT that prior to the Edict of Nantes, his estates would have been confiscated, but 2 CONT since the Edict, they would not be taken from him. A warning tone was 2 CONT evident. It was this Count, of the family de la Rochefoucauld, who held 2 CONT the chateau at Roucy, in Champagne, France, during the lifetime of Josue 2 CONT Marle or Merle and Jeanne Robbe, the parents of Gedeon Merlet. A local 2 CONT historian told me that the Counts of Roucy were Calvinists (Huguenots), and 2 CONT it is perhaps for this reason that the Marle/Merle family was living in 2 CONT Roucy in the late 1500's. The Edict of Nantes was revoked by Louis the Four- 2 CONT teenth on __________, but many Huguenots had already left France for the 2 CONT Netherlands, for the Palatinate in Germany, and for New Amsterdam, where 2 CONT a much greater tolerance than in Louis XIV's France prevailed for the Calvinist 2 CONT religious beliefs of the Huguenots. 2 CONT 2 CONT From SHIP PASSENGER LISTS: NEW YORK AND NEW JERSEY (1600-1825), edited and 2 CONT indexed by Carl Boyer, 3rd (Self-Published: Newhall, CA, 1978), p. 130. 2 CONT 2 CONT "October 12, 1662. The address took place at the Memorial 2 CONT Church of the Huguenots at Huguenot Park, Staten Island, New York. 2 CONT "Two additional Huguenot immigrants have recently been honored by having 2 CONT their names recorded in this edifice, namely Gedeon Merlet and his youngest 2 CONT son, Abraham. 2 CONT Gedeon Merlet was one of many Huguenots who found freedom from religious 2 CONT persecution in Holland during the first half of the 17th century. Under the 2 CONT promise of lands and aid in getting started in the New World, he with some 2 CONT twenty-nine other refugees came over to the New Netherlands in October, 1662, 2 CONT on the ship "Purmerland Church". With him were his wife Marguerite Martin and 2 CONT four minor sons, namely Joshua, born 1647; Paul, born 1654; John, born 1656; 2 CONT and Abraham, born 1658. 2 CONT Early in the year following his arrival, 1663, Gedeon Merlet, with six other 2 CONT Huguenot immigrants, joined in a petition to the Director General and the 2 CONT Council of New Netherlands for grants of suitable land, provision for temporary 2 CONT subsistence, and seed grain so that, as they stated, "the supplicants may exert 2 CONT their industry and zeal without obstruction in the cultivation of the land, not 2 CONT only for their personal benefit, but also for the welfare and good of the whole 2 CONT country. They also promised ultimately to fully repay the Council for such 2 CONT advances. 2 CONT This petition, the original of which is now on file in the state archives at 2 CONT Albany, was approved, and in the instance of Gedeon Merlet resulted in the 2 CONT assignment of land to himself and his sons in Staten Island, much of it in the 2 CONT vicinity and possibly covering the site of this church edifice. Here he lived 2 CONT the balance of his life, and his children grew to manhood." 2 CONT The fragments of the history of this period which have come down to us, in 2 CONT addition to records of land purchase and and transfers, indicate that Gedeon 2 CONT Merlet, during the first British occupancy of New Netherlands, was appointed by 2 CONT Governor Francis Lovelace as a constable in Staten Island (April 20, 1671). A 2 CONT little later, under the very brief re-occupancy of the Colony by the Dutch, he 2 CONT was appointed by Governor Colve as a magistrate (February 14, 1674). We have 2 CONT no record of his death, which must have occurred prior to 1683, as indicated by 2 CONT the inheritance and division of his land. 2 CONT Gedeon's youngest son, Abraham, through whom my family is descended, married 2 CONT about 1677 Christence Billieu, daughter of Pierre Billieu - a Huguenot 2 CONT immigrant of 1661 and prominent in the early settlement of Staten Island. Two 2 CONT children came from this union, viz., Margaret, baptized March 31, 1678 and 2 CONT Abraham, May 16, 1680. 2 CONT We have little information as to Abraham, the youngest son of Gedeon, except 2 CONT that he was for a period collector for the southern part of Staten Island. 2 CONT The name of Merlet very soon lost its French pronunciation and spelling, 2 CONT changing to Marlet, Marlett and Marlatt, with many other spellings. 2 CONT From this beginning the Marlatt family has multiplied and spread widely in 2 CONT the United States and Canada. 2 CONT Mention may appropriately be made here of a descendant of Gedeon Merlet who 2 CONT made a long and earnest attempt to trace and recover the records of the family, 2 CONT namely Mrs. Jane Marlett Taft, wife of the late Chief Justice of the Vermont, 2 CONT Russell S. Taft. Unfortunately she did not live to complete her work, but her 2 CONT manuscript is now in my possession, and if not utilized and published, will 2 CONT be filed for permanent record in the Library of Congress in Washington, to 2 CONT be available for future students." 2 CONT 2 CONT [Mr. C. L. Marlatt, who delivered the above address, referred to his 2 CONT ancestor, Abraham Merlet as "the youngest child" of Gedeon's family. Perhaps 2 CONT in 1935 the baptismal certificate of Jean Pierre Merlet had not yet been 2 CONT found at the French Huguenot of Mannheim, in the Palatinate region of Germany. 2 CONT The baptismal record of Jean Pierre Merlet (born 1658) indicates he was 2 CONT born after Abraham Merlet (born 1656). 2 CONT 2 CONT Source: NY Colonial Manuscripts, Vol. 10, Part 2, p. 49. This would SEEM to indicate that his son 2 CONT Elias had died before he, Nicholas, did, which would rule out the 2 CONT possibility that the Elias who married Anne BARBANK and was fathering 2 CONT children in the 1720's was the son of Nicholas II [The Stillwell 2 CONT Genealogy, by John E. A study of all the sources listed on p. 4 reveals no other 2 CONT Nicholas who could have been married to Rebecca and fathered a son 2 CONT before 1682. 2 CONT 2 CONT The BAYLES family lived in Jamaica, NY, and Nicholas II is known to 2 CONT have lived, or at least owned property there. [Jamaica records, cited in The Stillwell 2 CONT Genealogy, by John E. There were no STILLWELLS with either name to my [Mary 2 CONT Jackson? 1987] knowledge among the church records in England. 2 CONT Nicholas the emigrant had no known daughter named Rebecca, although 2 CONT some sources do suggest that he had a son named Elias, while others 2 CONT omit him. Although women named Rebecca married into the Stillwell 2 CONT family in the third and fourth generations, the BAYLES family could 2 CONT have been the only source for the name ELIAS. (The one exception to 2 CONT this is the Elias who married Anne BARBANK, the identity of and 2 CONT origin of whose name is unknown to me.) 2 CONT 2 CONT The name ELIAS was prevalent in the BAYLES family. Rebecca BAYLES 2 CONT had a brother with that name. In addition, there was an Elias 2 CONT BAYLIES in Setauket, where Rebecca's father lived from 1668-1674, 2 CONT after moving there from Jamaica.
