Alone...Live!

This 3 CD set is the first live album ever released by Prince. It was recorded during Prince's "One Nite Alone...Live! Tour" in March and April of 2002. The tour and CD set have received rave reviews from fans and critics. In my opinion, this is the best live album since 1975's "Gratitude" by Earth, Wind and Fire! Recorded to DAT from the soundboard, this set has superb audio quality with minimal overdubs (it's been reported that the only overdubs were audience applause between tracks and Rhonda Smith's bass on one song). The music on the set showcases the talent possessed by Prince and the band. Some songs have a jazz feel and have been extended. They include solos by guest saxophonists Maceo Parker, Najee and Candy Dulfer, along with solos by NPG members John Blackwell (Drums), Rhonda Smith (Bass), Renato Neto (Keyboards), and Greg Boyer (Trombone), as well as Prince. Other songs are stripped down with Prince primarily on the piano. In a few cases, songs are totally reworked and contain only minor elements of the original. The set includes music from 1997's "The Truth", 2001's "The Rainbow Children" and "One Nite Alone", a new jazz fusion song "Xenophobia", along with many fan favorites.
The treat for me is the bonus disc "One Nite Alone...The Aftershow: It Ain't Over!". Along with Prince and the band are guest appearances by George Clinton, Maceo Parker, Sheila E., Larry Graham, Candy Dulfer and Musiq. Prince's aftershows are legendary and this disc shows why, an incredibly funky jam session with truly talented musicians. The CD starts with an incredible version of "Joy In Repetition" from "Graffiti Bridge" then changes gear with "We Do This", a new song featuring George Clinton and Maceo Parker. Next is Musiq singing Just Friends (Sunny) as the band plays Sly Stone's classic "If You Want Me To Stay". "2 Nigs From West Compton" from "The Black Album" is next and is followed by reworked versions of "Alphabet Street" from "Lovesexy", "Peach" from "The Hits (Volume 1)", "Dorothy Parker" from "Sign 'O' The Times", and "Girls and Boys" from "Parade". The CD closes with "The Everlasting Now (Vamp)".
Members of the NPG Music Club also received 2001's "One Nite Alone" with their box sets. This disc is exclusive to NPG Music Club members and is not sold in stores. It's primarily Prince on piano. Besides the beautiful title song, it contains a cover of Joni Mitchell's "A Case Of U" which is dedicated to Prince's late father John L. Nelson, and the controversial song "Avalanche" that calls Lincoln a racist (more info). Rounding out the CD are "Here On Earth", "U're Gonna C Me", "Have A Heart", "Objects In The Mirror", "Pearls B4 The Swine", "Young and Beautiful", and "Arboretum".
I recommend this box set for all fans of Prince. The set delivers favorites not routinely performed in concert and intentionally avoids Prince's greatest hits. Among my favorites from this set are "Xenophobia", "Mellow" (from "The Rainbow Children"), "1+1+1 is 3" (from "The Rainbow Children"), "Anna Stesia" (from "Lovesexy"), "How Come U Don't Call Me Anymore" (a classic b-side covered by Alicia Keys on her debut album), "Joy In Repetition" (from "Graffiti Bridge"), "We Do This", "Peach" (from "The Hits (Volume 1))", "Dorothy Parker" (from "Sign 'O' The Times"), and "Girls and Boys" (from "Parade"). With over three hours of music and 36 songs on the 3 CD set, I'm sure you'll have many favorites too!
