Basic Car Configuration

The basic McCotter Technologies Turbo-Electric Concept Car is a modified General Motors, Chevy Cavalier. The systems for the electric vehicle are designed within the framework of this front wheel drive vehicle. However, the electric drive systems can be adapted to virtually any front wheel drive vehicle on the market today. All of the systems have been designed to be efficient, reliable and conserve usable energy. The ultimate goal has been to create a vehicle that is completely self-generating and self-sustaining. The vehicle will have a top speed of 100 miles per hour with virtually unlimited mileage. Most of the major obstacles regarding these systems have been addressed with few smaller problems yet to be solved.

Car Systems and Components

McCotter Technologies

The primary system incorporates a new Gyro KInetic Generator and support components. This generator provides power to the main turbine engine and vehicle lights, instruments and electrical systems. The Gyro Kinetic Generator is located to the left of the main turbine engine. The turbine engine is composed of four separate turbine units. Each of these turbine units operates independently. The exhaust thrust and velocity from these turbines is directed into ducts that are connected to a large impeller turbine that powers the two main drive alternators. These alternators provide power to the front and rear ballast batteries and wheel drive motors. Exhaust pressure and velocity is also ducted to a smaller impeller turbine which powers the cars accessories. The accessories include a vacuum pump for the brake system, and power steering pump. The main drive system alternators and the accessories are gear drive which eliminates the need for serpentine belts. The vehicle environmental control systems utilize the expanded and cooled exhaust from the turbines once it leaves the impellers. Passing through an expansion ducting, the air is cold enough to provide cool air conditioning. Vehicle heat is obtained from hot bleed air generated by all four of the main turbine electric motors. The failure of a single turbine unit will have little or no effect on vehicle operation. The other three turbines continue to provide system pressure. The vehicle is actually designed to operate normally on only two turbines, although there may be slight loss in power, performance and vehicle charge/range capability. The vehicle has an internal air induction scoop mounted under a modified high rise hood that includes a permanent metal mesh air conditioning style filter. Simply remove the filter from the holding frame, wash with soap and water and rinse with the garden hose and reinstall when dry. The filter should last the life of the vehicle and never needs replacement. Most of these systems will be explained in greater detail on other pages within this website.

Electrical Power, Generation and Charging Systems

McCotter Technologies

Above is a block diagram of the electrical systems. As you can see, it is divided into three separate groups that are indicated by different colors. System (1) is the Primary Power and Charging System which is color coded in green. The system includes the gyro kinetic generator, 6 flexible mount battery packs, and 4 secondary wheel generators. The gyro kinetic generator is rated at 1440 watts output (12 volts / 120 amps). This generator only provides power to the turbine engine, and the vehicles lighting, instrumentation and operating systems. These systems are designed to be as low power as possible. The turbine engine only requires 800 watts of power to operate. The remaining 640 watts (12volts / 53 amps is used for the vehicles systems and charging the 6 flexible mount supply batteries. It also includes 4 wheel generators, each generating about 24 volts / 5 amps at highway speeds. The output from these permanent magnret generators vary with speed but are still efficient at lower rpm. The wheel generators add additional power to the charging the ballast batteries and vehicle operating systems. This is a highly balanced system power formula designed to be as close to self-generating and self-supporting as possible. The new formula batteries charge quicker and require less power to charge.

The turbine engine units supply air (pressure/volume) to power the main impeller turbine to drive two gear driven alternators. Each alternator is rated at 2400 watts or 12 volts/200 amps. These alternators supply charge and power to the main drive system batteries and the wheel axel drive motors. The four main drive system batteries are 150 amp new formula lead acid batteries. This provides each of these systems (system 2 or system 3) with a total of 420 constant amps of power to power the front and rear drive motors These are represented by the two systems indicated in the block diagram color coded yellow and red. Unused power from the alternators is returned for main battery charging and additional power to the primary vehicle system (system1). All of this is controlled by the vehicles power management computer which senses vehicle speed and power load factors to balance the system so that vehicle operates at the most efficient level possible. Consequently, the primary system (system 1) will be more efficient at highway speeds, while the drive motor systems (systems 2 & 3) will be more efficient in stop and go city driving. The worst case senario that I see is that you might have to plug the vehicle in for charging every night. Of course, the vehicle will have charger units installed for this purpose.

Illustrated View Of Turbine Unit Installation

McCotter Technologies

The main turbine engine assembly is composed of four separate turbine units. these are modular units that are inserted into the main engine framework and housing. The illustration shows one of the turbine units removed. Exhaust ducts, electrical plugs, and engine bleed air ports are integrally pluged in when the turbine unit is lower into the main framework of the housing. By pushing down firmly and snapping the turbine unit into position, all connections are made simultaniously. Four self-capturing fasteners are then locked to hold the unit in postion.

Each of the Turbine units can be removed easily by first removing the engine inlet and screen cover. The turbine unit can then be removed by loosening the four fasteners and pulling upward to release the connections. Once removed from the main engine frame, a replacement turbine can be lower into the turbine well and pushed down into position. The four security fasteners are snapped closed and the inlet screen assembly is then reinstalled and secured on the engine. The entire process would take less than fifteen minutes to accomplish. Turbine units are also designed to be manufactured out of inexpensive reinforced plastics and materials. Re-built replacement turbine units could be obtained through an exchange process for as little as $150 to $200 per unit.. However, the turbines are still designed to have a service life of 50,000 to 100,000 miles or more depending upon driving conditions., The turbine units have a sealed bearing oiling system that may require periodic filling of a small reservour located near the top of the turbine. Normal maintenance of the vehicle will be as simple as possible so that the average owner and driver can keep the vehicle serviced with little or no problems.

Development And Production Plans

The >McCotter Technologies Turbo Electric Vehicle is complete package that is designed around a number of key components all working together to produce a reliable and efficient electric vehicle alternative. In order to accomplish this plan I will have to bring together a number of different manufacturers to do the final development and production of each of the key components.

(1) The Gyro Kinetic Generator and Wheel Generators will have to be built by a company that understands power generation and distribution. (2) The Flexible Battery Packs and the Main Drive Batteries will have to be manufactured by a reputable battery manufacturer. (3) The Electric Turbine Units will have to be built by a reputable Jet Engine Manufacturer due to the highly technical manufacturing requirements. This is also necessary, because there are other vehicles such as Jet Aircraft that could benefit from this new technology.(4) The Main Drive Motors and Turbine Core Motors would have to be built by a reputable Electric Motor Manufacturer., Finally, (5) The Vehicle and it's operating systems would have to built by a reputable car manufacturer such as General Motors. I say this because I have demonstrated that the technology can be easily adapted to their Chevy Cavilier.

Again, It would be impossible for me to accomplish any of this myself, nor am I even going to try. I can demonstrate the individual forms of technology but it will tak a unified and joint effort to get all of these systems produced as a single finished product. At this point, the choice is ours. We can look toward the future and start construction of this vehicle, or we can just sit back and wait for the oil companies and commodities brokers to push gasoline to prices that we can no longer afford. Again, the choice is up to us.
