Gum trees are the most well known Australian trees. There are many sorts of gum trees that can be found all over Australia. Gum trees have unusual flowers, or buds. The flowers have a hard cap the fits over the base. The cap falls off to reveal the flower . These flowers do not have petals. Instead, they have a mass of white things called stamens. After the flower dies, it dries up to become a gum nut. The gum leaves are hard and strong which enables them to grow in the desert. The leaves are famous for the eucalyptus smell they create. Sir Joseph Banks, who noted the trees created a brown gum or sap, first used the name gum tree in 1770.
