Child 1: Hillary Hillary began to receive 40 hours/week of ABA (discrete trial teaching) at 37.5 months of age. She began to attend a typical preschool with a shadow (i.e., aide) for two half days/week at 46 months of age. Hillary’s diagnosis prior to treatment was PDD. Scores are age equivalents in months
The results of intensive discrete trial teaching and inclusion in a typical preschool with a shadow are fairly dramatic. Hillary, in 13.5 months of treatment, has gained 24 months in communication, 26 months in daily living (she is fully urine and bowel trained including initiation), 34 months in socialization, and 23 months in motor skills. She has recently begun her typical preschool with the shadow for five half days/week while receiving discrete trial teaching the other half of the day. The intensive work by Hillary’s teachers and family may very well result in her attending a typical kindergarten class by age 6. Child 2: Mason Mason began to receive 30 to 40 hours/week of ABA (discrete trial teaching) at 42 months of age. His diagnosis prior to treatment was Autistic Disorder. Scores are age equivalents in months
Intensive, discrete trial teaching has resulted in similarly impressive gains for Mason. In 3.5 months of treatment, he has gained 11 months in communication, 6 months in daily living, 10 months in socialization, and 5 months in motor skills. Mason recently received intensive behavioral toilet training which resulted in successful time training (1 hour) for urination in less than 2 days. He was timed trained to 2 hours within 1 week. Initiation training was begun and Mason was independently initiating all urinations within 1.5 months. Now, 2.5 months after the start of toilet training, Mason is independently initiating both urinations as well as bowel movements. He wears a diaper only for bedtime currently. |
