A Word From Our Community Lay Director As I read the other day about airlines charging for "checked" baggage, it got me thinking about our emotional "baggage" and its associated costs. The great hymn, "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" tells us of the peace we miss and the pain we experience all because we fail to take Christ at his word and allow him to lessen our burden. The song urges us to take our woes to God in prayer and there we will find solace. The unseen costs of keeping our emotions bottled up are enormous. Stress is multiplied when we internalize our feelings and it is widely accepted that maladies such as high blood pressure, back trouble, and ulcers are often a direct result. The many faces of mental illness show themselves as well. Bitterness can creep into our lives because of the perceived absence of hope. When a person’s outlook changes, it can have devastating effects on friends and family. How many children feel as if their parents’ troubles are somehow their fault? I’m not so naïve as to think that prayer will cure all, but I believe because I’ve experienced it in my own life. I physically feel better after praying about specific problems. For me, that is enough to keep me coming back to the Lord time after time because I know I’m being heard and cared for. I don’t pretend that my life’s personal issues are any more numerous or difficult than anyone else’s, I just know that mine are at least minimized because the Lord has proven to me that He is with us. Oh, and one more thing… He doesn’t charge for checked baggage. De Colores, Jim |
A True Servant’s Heart As we read in the last chapter of John, the disciples had been fishing throughout the night. As they reached the shore the next morning, they saw a fire with fish on it and bread. In verse 12, Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast", and in the next verse it reads that "Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them, and so also with the fish". Jesus had prepared a meal for His Disciples and also had served it to them. This was the third time that Jesus revealed Himself to the disciples after His Resurrection. All of us have definitely been in the same position of receiving just like the disciples, whether it has been on our walks or on flights or in our everyday lives. God is so good to us! In the verses following the ones above, Jesus gives Peter a second chance to show that he really loves Him. Jesus, once again, asks him three times if he loves Him and Peter answers yes each time. Jesus replies each time with instructions to feed His lambs, tend My sheep, feed My sheep and the final commandment; Follow Me. God came to earth through the physical birth of His Son and our Lord, Jesus Christ. It is through Christ’s example that we learn of a True Servant’s Heart. Just like the disciples, our bodies have physical needs as well as spiritual needs. We must give of our bodies to give of our hearts to others. We must follow Christ. As a member of the Chrysalis board, my responsibility is the Dining Room at each of the flights. There is a need for Christ’s hands and feet to prepare and serve these young disciples (caterpillars transforming to butterflies) during their committed weekend with our Lord. Adult servers are needed before Sunday’s formal dinner and the youth from the Big House will serve thereafter. Come and be inspired by the young people. Fly with Christ, Gina Lake |
