Gunderson Foundation Minutes - Monday, December 02, 2002 The meeting was called to order by the Foundation President at 5:34PM. All Board Members were present. City of San Jose District 10 Councilmember Pat Dando also attended. * Cher Tickets- a discussion was held regarding what to do with the Cher ticketsdonated by Councilmember Dando's office.. A couple options were explored including: selling to staff for Foundation membership, and leftovers would be raffeled off. City club seat Lower box. The District Office may post on their bulletinboard. Greg to check with Josh (at Pat Dando's Office) Greg to contact Linda about DO policy. We'd like to get about $500 for the tickets if we can. * Brief Presentation on Foundation activities to date - summary of annual report. Fundraising phone drive- 40% of pledges were actually received. Significant donation of IT equipment from Samsung Corp. Scholarship award was discussed. A brief review of the process was given. The scholarship reimbursement was discussed. * Resolution to thank the City and Councilmember Dando's office for their generous $1,000 grant and motion to use the grant for last year's technology scholarship. Resolution was moved (Jim Henderson) and seconded (Demerris Brooks) Resolution passed unanimously. * Fundraising from Businesses Greg explained focus of fundraising goal for $40,000 based on an increase of 30% over last year. Councilmember Dando suggested tapping into the tobacco funds as a grant (Healthy Neighborhoods Venture Fund). The Councilmember sits on the grant Committee with 3 other council members. The possibility of combining with the Environmental and Spacial Technology (EAST)grant that the school has was discussed. (The contact in the Councilmember's office for the HNVF grant is Jim Cogan.) The Councilmember suggested a primary grant request for approximately $100,000 and a minor grant request of about $50,000. We discussed ideas about tying the three concepts together- information technology, anti-smoking/ drugs, and environmental issues. Another option was discussed--the 10th grade "Service Learning Project" for Social Science students. Councilmember Dando said the categories for the HNVF grants are as follows: Education Seniors Justation In addition, the Councilmember reported that her office had secured a pledge of $1500 from Westfield Corporation. The Coucilmember also gave us a check for $1500 from Great Oaks Water company. It was reported that Thousand Oaks HOA is considering a contribution through Jerry Strangis. We are continuing to pursue donations from the Capital Auto Mall Dealerships. Carls is also another possible source. Mark Normadin was checking into their family foundation. Coucilmember Dando said that it may be possible that her office could contribute another $1500 from the District 10 funds. In 'n 'Out is still a feasible source to tap for fundraising. Significant schoalarship contribution (ie, Great Oaks Water) should be recognized with the scholarship in the name of the donor. We also discussed publicizing these contribution throught he print media. Possible coverage in: The Blossom Valley and AlmadenTimes, The Link, and the Mercury News. Dr. Murray will check w/ DO staff to get PR support. The idea of exploring funding large companies was also discussed. Most larger companies such as IBM have matching grant programs. * Other Items - "Distinguished School" Demerris said that she worked with Mary and with staff on a rubric to make sure the school can meet the criteria for California Distinguished School. She distributed the Site Plan. - Annual dues. These will be addressed in Spring. Dr. Murray suggested revisiting or having a meeting to outline goals so that they can be addressed in the "phone-a-thon" driver.
