Sabbats and Esbats

There are 8 Sabbats each year - - 4 major Sabbats and 4 minor Sabbats. The major Sabbats are: Candlemas, Beltane, Lughnadash (aka Lammas), and Samhain. The minor Sabbats are: Spring Equinox (Ostara), Summer Solstice (Midsummer aka Litha), Autumn Equinox (Mabon), and Winter Solstice

Winter Solstice (Yule): It is the height of winter, the shortest day of the year and the day with the greatest darkness. Decorate with holly and mistletoe, and light white candles to welcome the sun's returning light.

Candlemas (Imbolc): February 2nd. The first festival of spring fertility; welcomes the change from old to new. Feast of the waxing light - celebrate the renewing power of the sun. Decorate with spring flowers.

Spring Equinox (Ostara): March 21st. The second of the Spring festivals, this is a time for new beginnings, rebirth, and planning for future gains. It is the time when the hours of the day and the night are equal.

Beltane: May Day. The last of the 3 Spring fertility festivals. A day of feasts and rituals - the peak of Spring. Create a Maypole, do homage to the Earth.

Summer Solstice (Midsummer/Litha): The powers of nature reach their highest point. The longest day of the year; the Sun is at its zenith. The eve is the time to commune with field and forest sprites and Faeries. Weave herbs and feathers into talismans. It is the classic time for Magick of all kinds.

Lughnasadh (Lammas):The beginning of the harvest cycle, the Sun rises farther in the south each day and the nights grow longer and reminds us that nothing in the Universe is constant.

Autumn Equinox (Mabon): The 2nd harvest sabbat - day and night are equal. It is a day of meditation, thanksgiving, and introspection. Gather dried roots and plants for medicines.

Samhain (Halloween): The time when the veil between the worlds is thinnest; communicate with those who have passed on and light a candle to help guide them along their way. Set goals and plans for the future. The last of the harvest sabbat.

We are of the Old Ways - those who walk with the Goddess and the God.

Keep the Sabbats and Esbats to the best of your abilities.

Harm none.

Those of our ways are kind to ALL creatures.

Create joy.

Teach only what you know to the best of your ability. Teach not to boost pride and teach only those who will use the knowledge wisely.

Keep the Law close to your heart.

"Pray to the Moon when she is round. Luck with you will then abound. What you seek for shall be found, On the sea or solid ground."

Breathing and Meditation

Assume a comfortable position (sitting or lying down), body relaxed, eyes closed. Inhale slowly thru your nose to the count of 3, hold, then slowly exhale thru your mouth. Repeat several times, breathing slower and slower. Your breathing should be calm and free of tension or struggle. Relax your body and picture a place of serenity in your mind. Visualize yourself at this place, all the tensions and worries of the day are leaving as you exhale. Keep inhaling and exhaling slowly, and when you have reached inner peace, gradually open your eyes. Practice this breathing exercise every day to increase your ability to retain air and to help you face the day with a more serene attitude. It is important that you choose a time when you will not be disturbed and can concentrate fully on your breathing without fear of being interrupted.

Go to nature and observe. Attune your inner-mechanism to the quiet pace of the seasons and the procession of the constellations across the sky. Go alone, or with that person closest to you. Watch the moon rise, walk in the forests. Feel the earth, drink the water, breathe the air...then light the sacred candles and begin the life you were meant to live.
