RICHARD…A Matrilineal Connection

Captain Peter DeVaux of Little Bras d’Or married Charlotte Richard and hence the Richard family is of interest to me. What follows is in no way an exhaustive search, but rather a collection of notes made by me as I examined documents in the process of collecting date on the Acadian DeVaux family. The paper was prepared for a cousin who requested assistance from me in his Richard family genealogy and it includes a number of suggestions with respect to additional sources of information. There is some speculation here on my part, but wherever a specific date is given it reflects data from a primary source seen by me. The one exception that comes to mind is the birth date of François-Regis Richard, which was transcribed from his grave marker at the old Chapel Point Burial Ground at Little Bras d’Or (St. Joseph Church). F-R was born in Little Arichat (now West Arichat) and thus the record of his birth was lost along with all the acts recorded in the registers of the Arichat church when a fire destroyed the glebe house in 1838, presenting a considerable challenge to anyone doing research on the families of that parish.
