Welcome to a page devoted to things I'm doing in the SCA.
The SCA is a non-profit
organization that studies the Medieval and Renaissance lifestyle in a fun and creative
fashion. We are not trying to create museum replicas, but rather to get a taste for
what it would have been like to have lived in that time. And we don't recreate actual
wars like they do in Civil War groups. We do have mock wars, but we never know the
outcome ahead of time. So they are very exciting to watch. Our biggest war is Pennsic
in PA each August. Approximately 12,000 members attend. But there are tiny events
too. Rather like the story of the Three Bears, there is an event just the right size
for every person. Families with children are welcome too. In fact, many families
have grown up in the SCA. So if one of your school kids says her friend's Mommy came
to school and she was the Queen, she's probably an SCA child. Events are not advertised
to the public usually, but if you happen upon one and ask around they'll direct you
to the Newcomers tent for information.

I think I may well hold the SCA record for the person who has been in the longest
and has never won an award, not even an Award of Arms. I first started in 1977 and
have lived in both the Kingdom of Caid and the Kingdom of the West. Right now I live
in Caid, in the Barony of Gyldenholt.
My very first persona was Marian the Jester,
because I wanted a persona that would juggle and do magic. I still have my very first
costume (garb) hanging the wall. Here's a photo of it:
I made it when I was barely out of high school. I didn't know till AFTER
my first event that prints weren't
period. So I think I only wore it once.
At
some point years ago I switched my persona to gypsy. Because then I could not only
juggle and do magic, but I could add belly dancing and sword swinging and other excitement.
A few years ago when I moved back to CAID, I took up archery in the SCA and now
I'm a bowman. That is one rank up from Novice. I live close to a free outdoor archery
range. If you want to know when the Gyldenholt archery practices are, e-mail me.
I also make my own wooden arrows with real feathers. We sell used bows from time
to time, so if you need one, please e-mail me.
Here is a photo of me and the bow
I shoot:

My
SCA name is Sapphira of Alexandria.

Yes, I made my entire costume. Many men in the SCA sew as well,
and most areas have a costumers guild. We also make our own armor, leather accessories,
hats, gloves, swords, and more!
If you would like an invitation to one of my SCA clubs on YAHOO, just E-Mail
me and tell me your interests. I have clubs for Bards, Costuming, Middle Eastern
Dancers, Archers, Calligraphy, and other SCA related topics.
