Not That Kind of Hamachi

Last Modified 1999-Sept 21

The Japanese language has many homophones -- words that are pronounced the same but have different spellings and different meanings. Some alternative Hamachi refer to:

-A powerful migratory fish much like the bluefin tuna. According to the United States Food and Drug Administration, Hamachi is known as Amberjack, King Amberjack, Buri, Racing Tuna, Seriora quinqueradiata, or Yellowtail. Some sources say that the scientific name is Seriola lalandi. Other names it may be know by include Japanese amberjack, Mojyako, Yazu, and Tsubasu.

-A kind of sushi made with Hamachi fish. It has a light gold flesh. Like a chicken, it has both dark and light meat. It is found on both U.S. coasts, but many sushi chefs prefer to fly in specially cultivated yellowtail from Japanese hatcheries. Compared to other kinds of fish, it is richer in protein, good fat, and vitamins A, B1, B2 and D.

-An electronic pet similar to a Tamagochi, written as a Java applet. Roger Korman of Seattle says that, loosely translated, Hamachi means cute little hamster. If you take good care of it, Hamachi will scamper around your computer for 20 'months.' Source code is available as a zip file or a gzipped tar file

-A notch that starts the sharpened edge of a sword

-A gigabit ethernet adaptor for Linux
