World Wide Web Pages

The number of scouting oriented WWW pages would fill several volumes. An exhaustive list would not be very productive, since links change regularly. Here are just a few that are of local interest or offer a lot of resources and links to other sites. All of these have been verified this month (11/97). All links re-verified 3/2000.

FTP Site

The US Scouting Service Project FTP site is at:

ftp://ftp1.scouter.com/usscouts/
This site contains clip-art, skits, songs, crafts, and ceremonies. Much of it is mirrored on the MacScouter WWW page listed above. This FTP site can also be accessed with a WEB browser at:
ftp://ftp1.scouter.com/usscouts/ftpindex.html
If this site is slow or down, the clip are is available at:
Due to slowdowns and overloads at their FTP site, USSSP has switched over to an entirely web-based access to their library at:
http://clipart.usscouts.org

Usenet Newsgroup

Access to the usenet newsgroups requires access to a mail server. Your ISP can provide you with instructions for accessing newsgroups. The newsgroups are rec.scouting and its sub-group, rec.scouting.usa. There are some others under the rec.socuting area, but they contain more arguments than useful material. It is also possible to access rec.scouting and rec.scouting.usa through the Zippo Web site at:

http://drn.zippo.com/news-bin/wwwnews?rec.scouting.* Try http://www.deja.com/usenet/ instead.

SCOUTS-L Listserver

One of the best sources for information of all types. It has been billed as "The Roundtable that never ends." Access requires having an e-mail address. To subscribe, send an e-mail to listserv@listserv.tcu.edu containing the one line message, subscribe scouts-l fname lname where "fname" and "lname" are your first and last name. You will receive a confirmation message that you must reply to with the word OK. You will then receive a welcome message and a list of commands and instructions. Make sure you read them carefully!
To post messages on the SCOUTS-L list, send them to scouts-l@listserv.tcu.edu.
The main thing to remember is:

Do not send commands to SCOUTS-L and do not send mail to the listserver.

Commands go to:
listserv@listserv.tcu.edu (there is not a person at this address. All commands are read by the machine and either acted on, or rejected and returned if invalid)

Messages go to:
scouts-l@listserv.tcu.edu (the "l" in "scouts-l" is the letter "L" and not the number "1." The list is limited to 50 messages per day, so people get upset if one of these messages is a mis-addressed command.
Be careful!
