(and for this we labor and strive), that we have put our hope in the living God, who is the Savior of all men, and especially of those who believe. 1 Timothy 4:10 When he has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him who put everything under him, so that God may be all in all. 1 Corinthians 15:28 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Philippians 2:10-11 and that he may send the Christ, who has been appointed for you--even Jesus. He must remain in heaven until the time comes for God to restore everything, as he promised long ago through his holy prophets. Acts 3:20-21 You know the message God sent to the people of Israel, telling the good news of peace through Jesus Christ, who is Lord of all. Acts 10:36 Consequently, just as the result of one trespass was condemnation for all men, so also the result of one act of righteousness was justification that brings life for all men. Romans 5:18 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever! Amen. Romans 11:36 For Christ's love compels us, because we are convinced that one died for all, and therefore all died. 2 Corinthians 5:14 to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment--to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ. Ephesians 1:10 And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way. Ephesians 1:22-23 one God and Father of all, who is over all and through all and in all. Ephesians 4:6 He who descended is the very one who ascended higher than all the heavens, in order to fill the whole universe.) Ephesians 4:10 and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross. Colossians 1:20 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 1 Timothy 2:3-4 who gave himself as a ransom for all men--the testimony given in its proper time. 1 Timothy 2:6 but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom he made the universe. Hebrews 1:2 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. John 3:17 And all mankind will see God's salvation. Luke 3:6 The first passage says it all. Paul's statement to Timothy is that God is the Savior of all men. He doesn't say that God merely wishes to be the Savior of all men. God is the Savior of all men. And if there's any doubt that "all" means everyone, we see that Paul says "especially of those who believe". This is clearly saying that God saves believers in a special way, but He is also the Savior of everyone else. In the 1 Corinthians passage, we read that God will be "all in all". If this is true, how can anyone be eternally separated from Him? If so, Paul would have said that God is "all in everything except those in the fiery lake". The Philippians passage is another wonderful verse. Paul tells us that every tongue will confess that Jesus is Lord. "Yes, that's true", you say, "some will confess willingly and others will be forced to confess, even though they have no desire for Christ's rule." There's one problem with this way of thinking. Paul writes: "Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost." (1 Corinthians 12:3) Therefor, no true confession of the Lordship of Jesus can be made without the Holy Spirit. If every tongue will confess, then everyone will, at some point in time, receive the Holy Spirit, and be SAVED! Let's skip down to the verse from 1 Timothy chapter 2. This clearly states that God wants all men to be saved. You may say, "Yes, God wants all men to be saved, but he won't force them against their will." Hmmmmmm... I have two things to say in response. First, if there is anything God wants, don't you think He can have it? If not, is God truly omnipotent? Second, supposing God won't force anyone against their will, we need to ask ourselves, "Does He even have to?" Is it possible that God can persuade men to come to Him of their own free will? I like to think of Paul's experience on the road to damascus. He was the most anti-Christian zealot of the times. And yet, God persuaded him to become just as zealous for Christ. If He can do this with Paul, is there anyone who would be stubborn enough to beat the Creator in a contest of wills? As for the rest of the passages, notice the use of the words "all", "everything", and "everyone". I think it would be difficult for anyone to read these verses objectively and still have doubts that God intends to save ALL men. However, objectivity can be a difficult thing- especially when certain errors have become so widely accepted. So let's address the objections that commonly arise, and we'll see which view the scriptures truly support. |
