The Windy City-based Catherine specialize in dollops of double guitar swirl-pop laced with a lite fuzz hangover. The 14 tracks contained on their sophomore offering serve up warm, six-string drenched images of pop culture memories from youthful days gone by, from "Cotton Candy High" and "Pink Floyd Poster" to Good Luck Charm." While Catherine's specialty is guitar blitz generously sprinkled with catchy hooks, the group occassionally lets loose with tasty auditory treats like "Milkshake," which is filled with whispering shimmer guitar and floating vocal softness. The quartet is joined by fellow Chicagoan (and Smashing Pumpkins' bassist) D'Arcy on "Four Leaf Clover," which is all guitar crunch and catapaulting rhythms. Trippy, phazer-styled acoustic guitar work coats "Punch Me Out" in a cozy haze of psychedelia. Catherine has found the perfect balance between rage guitar theatrics and acoustic tinged mellowness, all of which make Hot Saki & Bedtime Stories a satisfying sonic brew and a must read.
