A Brief History of Holy Family Catholic Church

In efforts to further assist the members of the parish of Our Lady of Guadalupe who lived on the eastern section of the parish boundaries, Fr. Henry Van De Castille established a Catechetical Center on McPherson Street in 1974.  This center served for CCD, youth activities and meetings.  Mass began to be celebrated under the hospices of the Oblate Priests from Our Lady of Guadalupe at this Catechetical Center.  The Mission of Holy Family was established.

In 1984 Fr. Bernardino Herrero was named Administrator of Holy Family Parish.  Under his leadership, the Independent Mission continued to grow and the dream to build a church was born.  The parishioners worked hard fund-raising.  On May 19, 1991 the present church was blessed and dedicated by the Most Reverend Bishop Rene H. Gracida, D.D.

In 1991, Fr. Alejandro Salazar was named Administrator of Holy Family Parish.  Several remodelings were done including much needed office space.  In 1994 Fr. Salazar was officially named Pastor of Holy Family Parish.  Several ministries were begun--with a special emphasis on Youth Ministry.  In 1997 the Church Bell Tower and Walkway were blessed and dedicated.  In 1997 the church roster listed 500 families and growing.

In March 1998 Fr. P. Nolasco Hinojosa, Jr. was named Administrator while continuing to be Administrator at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish in Encinal, Texas and on January 12, 2000 was appointed pastor of both parishes by Archbishop Roberto O. Gonzalez, O.F.M., Apostolic Administrator of the diocese.

On August 9, 2000 the Diocese of Laredo was erected and Most Reverend James A. Tamayo, D.D. was installed as the First Bishop of the Diocese.  The Diocese is made up of seven counties:  Dimmit, Jim Hogg, La Salle, Maverick, Webb, Zapata, and Zavala.  Thus this parish is now part of the Diocese of Laredo.

In the middle of June, 2002 a statue of Holy Family (the patrons of the parish) was placed beneath the bell tower.  On June 25, 2002 the statue was blessed and dedicated.  This was in Thanksgiving to the Holy Family of Nazareth by Parishioners and Friends.
