Tubac, Arizona and the Anza Trail
There are two ways to enjoy Tubac. One is to sign up in
Green Valley
for the 10K map
guided walk, see the town and walk on the historic Anza Trail along
the river. This map guided walk is sponsored by the
Tucson Walking Club and is
open to the public.
The second is to make your own walk, include the beautiful Anza trail and then have a meal in Tubac and walk some of the historic and artsy streets. The Anza Trail is part of a National Historic Trail and runs through several states.
For the section that runs through Tubac, the trail head can be found in the historic section of Tubac. To get there, take I-19 South from Tucson. Look for the second exit for Tubac, Exit #34. Turn left at bottom of ramp – sign for Presidio State Historic Park. Turn left again at next stop sign. Turn right on Plaza Rd. into Tubac. Immediately turn right onto Tubac Road. Stay on Tubac Road – follow signs into parking lot designated for Anza Trail Head and park there. Public restrooms are off Will Rogers Lane – ½ block back on Tubac Road to the right – blue sign- restroom in the square to the left.
It is an easy walk on natural trail and is partially shaded by cottonwood trees. The river is beautiful. The area is frequented by birders. It is a multi-use trail. We saw evidence of horses when we were there.
Part of the fun of hiking and walking is what you do afterwards. We stopped in to a brand new restaurant, The Artist's Palate, and had an excellent fresh and beautifully prepared lunch for a very reasonable price. Fortified with lunch, we then explored the town and ended up buying some pottery and southwest decorator items at La Paloma de Tubac.

Columbia River Gorge Walking Weekend
Every other year, if we're lucky, the Columbia River Walking Club of
Portland, Oregon hosts a long weekend of hikes and walks in the
beautiful Columbia River Gorge. They usually have dinner gatherings for
the walkers and each day you'll find the club volunteers cooking thier
"world famous hot dog lunch." It's a wonderful way to enjoy the woods
and waterfalls of this beautiful area. The club also has frequent walks
throughout the year.

About
Socks: Let's get you started on the right foot. Walking depends on
foot health. If you plan to walk in cotton socks... don't! Wendy
Bumgardner, of About Walking,
fills us in.... Space age fibers. Antibacterial! Antifungal! Shock
absorbing! Wicking action! Antifriction! Battle shearing forces! Who
would of thought the lowly sock worthy of such hyperbole? Many of us
just throw on a pair of cotton crew socks, lace up the shoes and hit the
trail. Some of us are bold enough to wear nylons or even go sock-less in
our shoes or sandals. Ah, but sock technology is catching up. They
promise to keep sweaty feet dry, prevent blisters, reduce fatigue, and
control temperature.
