In August, Don went to Holland for training at Philips Medical's headquarters in Eindhoven. After an eight hour flight from Detroit (+ 3 hours from Ft. Lauderdale) on KLM (Royal Dutch Airlines) he arrived in Amsterdam. Then, another hour and half south by bus to Eindhoven. A smallish city by American standards, where I would guess 65 - 75 % of the population owns a bicycle instead of a car. That seems to be the main mode of transportation in and around the city. The food was good and most of the people seem to speak english as a second language which made communicating less of a problem than I initially thought it would be. Most restaraunts are bistro style and the whole city shuts down at 6PM except for the restaraunts & bars. These places are packed every night (Don't they have kitchens in their flats?) until 10 or 11 PM, it's like a street party every night. Beer is cheaper than water to drink and it is consumed in large quantities but nobody seems to be drunk. At least they don't act like it. The weather couldn't have been better. It was upper 50's at night and upper 60's during the day and this was in the middle of August. No clouds and a slight breeze some days made it very pleasent to be outside. Most buildings in Eindhoven don't even have air conditioning and I see why although, it did get a little warm in the training lab with all of the equipment on. In my class were people from: The Netherlands, Austria, Germany, The Czech Republic and Japan. It's interesting to meet people from all over the world and find out just how much alike we really are. Unfortunately I also found out how different we can be, particularly in the area of personal hygiene. Some of these guys didn't take a bath the entire time we were there, by the end of the week........Whew! That was really the only bad thing about the whole trip, unless you include the travel time.

Some of the Bistro's. Everybody sits outside to eat & drink.
A Dutch movie theater. Movie releases seem
to be a few weeks behind the US.

A car dealership. They sell several diff. makes. Never saw anyone buying.
The sidewalks are not for people. If you walk here, you're likely
to get run over.

The Philips Lighting HQ. The top floors of the tower are the test
Even in Eindhoven
you can't get away from McDonald's.
facilities for lamps. They burn brightly 24 / 7 and can be seen for miles.
