ROATAN

Anthony's Key Resort

This is a photo of Anthony's Key Resort. You actually have to take a boat to get to it (unless you swim). It's not connected to the main island of Roatan. For a much better picture and more info check out Anthony's Key Resort. It's a very relaxing place to stay. I didn't wear any shoes or see a single car all week.

This is an octopus in case you couldn't tell. They only come out at night. I still haven't taken a picture of them that I'm really happy with, but I had to put one in anyway just because I like to watch them so much. It's amazing to watch them move about. The best way I can think of to describe it is they sort of ooze or kind of flow. They're constantly changing colors. They're generally green but can change to a dark rust color when agitated or threatened. You really have to see it to appreciate it.

Yes, this is the vicious creature made famous by that movie "The Deep", a Moray Eel. I'm not saying that they couldn't hurt you but their reputation is much worse than their actions. They don't generally lurk in holes waiting for careless divers. If they're not used to divers they usually won't come out at all. However some sites are visited regularly and they become quite friendly with divers.

They may be clumsy on land, but underwater turtles are incredibly graceful not to mention pretty fast when they want to be. This one didn't seem to mind having its picture taken. I think my dive buddy took this picture because I seem to remember swimming along with the video camera trying to keep up while the turtle just effortlessly glided away.

Hi there

This is one of my all time favorite pictures. It was taken while on a scheduled dolphin dive. Wild dolphins aren't quite so cooperative. It was a great dive but I also snorkeled with them which was even better. We thought if we had a ball the dolphins would be more likely to interact with us. We hadn't anticipated the dolphins playing keep away from the humans. We spent the whole time chasing the ball. They would let us get within inches of the ball and then seemingly come out of nowhere and knock it away. Sometimes they would even fake that they were going to hit it with their nose (I don't think nose is actually an accepted scientific term, but you know what I mean) and then turn away at the last minute leading you to believe you were going to get the ball. Then just as you were about to grab it they would swat it with their tail (or fluke, which is in fact an accepted scientific term). I think they had more fun than we did.
