Early in January,1900, a small group of painters, realizing the serious need of improving their working conditions and wages, agreed to form a local union for the Calumet Region. Painters Local 460 received its official charter on January 31, 1900.
By May 1900, the local had grown to thirty members and the first houly wage of twenty-five cents per hour with a ten hour day and fifty-nine hours work week was established. One Hundred years later, our local has grown to 600 members. On June 22, 2001, Painters Local 8 of Gary merged with Local 460 increasing our membership to over 900 members as well as broadening our jurisdiction. Some of the trades that our local represents are Industrial Painters, Commercial Painters and Drywall Tapers, Hydro Cleaners, Asbestos Removal and Containment as well as Lead Abatement work. In August, 2002, NWIN Local 460 became a part of District Council 91 along with 11 other locals from Indiana, Kentucky and Tennesee.
