Dellinger Grist Mill on Cane Creek, located at Hawk, NC, just four miles east of Bakersville on State Road 1211 ( Cane Creek Road ) was established by Reuben Dellinger in 1867. It has been in the Dellinger family for over 146 years...operated by Reuben, David and Marvel Dellinger, my great grandfather, grandfather, and father, respectively, from 1867-1955. It was restored by Jack Dellinger ( myself ) in 1997-2000 and placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1998. I currently grind corn into cornmeal and grits utilizing the same time-honored methods and machinery my ancestors used.

Our times of operation are every third Saturday and the following week for the months May-September, every day except Sundays in October and November. We will grind corn, conduct tours and have demonstrations 10:00 am - 4:00 pm on open days, with conditions permitting.

June 14,16-21
July 12,14-19
August 9,11-16
September 13,15-20
October 4-November 22, except Sundays.

Cornmeal, and grits are available, ground from the finest USDA approved mountain grown corn. I have also published a book "Dellinger Grist Mill on Cane Creek" ( a history of the Mill, my family, and the surrounding area 1861-2000 ) which is also available on site. Meal and grits are $5.00 each; the book is $15.00 per copy. Tours are free. DVD's created on a tour ( about an hour in time ) in October, 2007, describing the history of the Mill and it's detailed operation, and demonstrating it grinding corn as it did in 1867, 1901, and 1955 are available for $10 each. All products are available at the Mill, The Orchard at Altapass, and at Young's Fuel Service in Bakersville.

Directions to Dellinger Mill:
From I-40 in North Carolina or I-81 in Tennessee and from the Blue Ridge Parkway:
Go to Bakersville, the county seat of Mitchell County, NC.
There is one traffic light in Bakersville and it is located adjacent to the courthouse. Turn onto Mitchell Avenue going east, which becomes Cane Creek Road ( State Road 1211 ) as you leave Bakersville. Go exactly four (4) miles, with no turns. Dellinger Mill has a large sign on the right side of the road. The mill parking lot is near the Mill, down the access road on the right side of Cane Creek Road.
