Although founded in medieval times by Edward I, Chirk Castle has developed over the ages into a mansion of great style. Acquired by Sir Thomas Myddleton in 1595, the castle is rich in historical associations from many periods. Richard Middleton, the eldest son of Fulke and Elizabeth, who married Jane Dryhurst became Governor of Denbigh Castle. A monumental brass of Richard Myddelton (d.1575), some-time govenor of Denbigh Castle, and his wife Jane Dryhurst (d.1565), at Llanfarchell Church, near Denbigh.
