This page deals with pigeon diseases and treatments ,the diseases mentioned here are the ones that I've encountered and treated successfully but I'm sure there are other problems that I haven't seen yet ,the medications mentioned here are the ones I use and keep on hand at all times but I'm also sure there are other medications that will work just as well.

Canker: That is one of the most common diseases and it looks like a yellow spongy growth that usually appears in the mouth and throat but it can also affect other parts of the body ,treatments is simple but should be given ASAP or it could choke the pigeon ,I use Metronidazol or any medications that have the (ZOLE)at the end of the name like fishzole ETC.Treatment lasts 3 to 5 days depending on severity of the problem ,I've also heard of Spartrix that works great and it's a one day treatment but I've never used it myself.

Respiratory problem:The birds affected usually cough and sneeze and there is a watery discharge from the nose and mouth ,if you keep the pigeon's chest next to your ear you can hear the wheezing ,this disease could also kill the pigeons if not treated ,the treatments is simple and effective ,I use Tylan and Aureomyacin for this problem ,one TSP of each medication in one gallon of water for seven days ,make new mixture every day ,the birds stop to sneeze and cough usually at the fourth day but continue the medication full seven days.

Other diseases like ,Coccidiosis,Salmonella,Paratyphoid,ETC.These are pretty serious diseases that could wipe out entire collections in no time if not treated,there are a number of good medications that work on these problems ,there are different symptoms but the end results are the same ,death of the bird .First let tell you about the symptoms ,birds are fluffed up ,the droppings are watery or have changed color ,the bird is losing weight rapidly and gets so weak that can't stand on it's feet so it either sits all the time or if it tries to walk it just falls over .
My first choice for treatment is Cipro,it is a miracle medication and it has saved a lot of my pigeons ,it is the strongest human grade Antibiotic on the market and you'll need a prescription to get it unless you can find it online,a few of my friends have found it online and bought it that way .Another medication I've used and it worked great is Sulmet ,I used the powder form and 1 1/2 TSP per 2 gallon of water for six days clean out the problem .
Other problems that I've heard about but never seen are Worms ,PMV and POX ,worms are easy to treat and there are vaccinations for PMV or POX .The best cure I can recommend is prevention ,don't just bring birds from all over the place and add them to your collection ,Quarantine new birds for at least 30 days or longer and that will save you a lot of headaches,please e-mail me if you have any questions or comments,thanks
