"Writing assignments provide opportunities to apply both the skills and the creativity of critical thinking."(Harris, Eleser,1997) The process of writing forces one to define his thesis and provide reasonable support for his thinking, while avoiding faulty logic, ambiguity and bias. In order to accomplish this, writers must engage in systematic analysis and evaluation of ideas.
The writing process involves three recursive phases: planning (before the process), drafting (during the process), and responding (after the process). (El-Hindi, 1997) Instruction in each phase of this process will foster the critical thinking process. During the planning stage one must determine the purpose for writing, activate prior knowledge and organize ideas. During the drafting phase, one must self-regulate and correct his thinking as necessary. Finally, self-evaluation of a paper's completeness is viewed as an important metacognitive activity for writing.(Englert et al, 1988)
