The Liberian Center

This is the Map of Liberia, showing the political
subdivision of the country.

This is the map of Liberia. It shows the 13 political subdivision of the country. they are Grand Cape Mount Count County; Bomi County; Montserrado County; Lofa County; Margibi County; Bong County; Grand Bassa County; Nimba County; Grand Gedeh County; River Cess County; Grand Kru County; Sinoe County; and Maryland County. The Liberian Senate is currently considering legislation to create the 14th county in Liberia. It will be carved out of Grand Gedeh County, and will be called River Gee County.

As you will notice, Liberia is bounded on the west by Sierra Leone; on the north by Guinea; and on the east by Ivory Coast. On the south is the Atlantic Ocean. It has an area of approximately 43,000 square miles.South America is just 6,000 miles south of Liberia.

To those who are interested in the history of the slave trade, I like to mention two historical facts: If you look at the map, north and west of Liberia, you will see, "Amistad Africans." These were the homes of the Africans slaves of the Amistad. Yankoi, one of the Africans of the Amistad mentioned that he lived close to the Zaliba River. The Zaliba is close to the city of Voinjama in Lofa County. It is also significant to indicate the proximity of Liberia to South America. Liberia is about 6,000 miles from Brazil. After the British instituted a quarantine on ships heading up the North Atlantic, the main route for the slavers became the South Atlantic, between Brazil and West Africa. Liberia was one of the countries hit the hardest, by the slavers, during the second quarter of the nineteenth century.
