UN to Send 15,000 Military Personnel to Monitor Liberian Peace Agreement, and help Rebuild Liberia


The key components of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1509, which establishes UNITED NATIONS MISSION TO LIBERIA (UNMIL), effective October 1, 2003 are as follows: (in cooperation with the transitional government of Liberia)

(1) Establish UNMIL in Liberia for 12 months beginning October 1, 2003;
(2)Reestablishment of National Authority throughout Liberia;
(3)Observe and Monitor Cease fire Agreement between warring factions;
(4)Disarmament.Demobilization, Reintegration, and Repatriation(DDRR) for all Armed parties;
(5)Provide Security at Key Government Installations, including Ports, Airports, and Vital Infrastructure;
(6)Develop international financial institutions. international development organizations;
(7) Restore Proper Administration of Natural Resources;
(8)Consolidate Government Institutions, including a national legal framework;
(9)Formation of a new and Restructured military;
(10)Restructure the Police Force of Liberia;
(11)Protect and Promote Human Rights in Liberia; and
(12)Prepare for National Elections.
