LION PAUL CANNADA ~ Everyday Hero

THURMONT LIONS CLUB

Paul contributes his talent and time to many arenas in the Thurmont community: to the Lady of Mount Carmel Church, community of Thurmont and the Thurmont Lions Club, as well as the International Lions Club.   When someone needs a leader, they think of Lion Paul.

Lion Paul and his wife, Lion Jo Ann, attend church on a regular basis.  He always responds whenever and wherever he is needed.   When the Parrish Center needed a new ceiling, Paul was there every minute.   When there are activities at the Parrish Center, Paul is there helping in all aspects where help is needed.  He doesn’t know what the word “NO” means; it isn’t in his vocabulary.

Lion Paul is very active in the neighborhood that he lives, JerMae Estates.  He was very instrumental in establishing the JerMae Homeowners Association, Inc. (HOA)  serving as President the first year. Thanks to Paul we have a very successful and active HOA. He has no problem in pursuing an issue or doing whatever is necessary to get the job accomplished.  His philosophy is sticking his neck out if he believes he is right.  Paul takes on responsibilities that motivates him by a genuine desire to help others.  You can knock on his door or give him a telephone call and he is willing to help neighbors whatever the need may be.  He serves as a handyman to anyone who needs work performed, taxi driver for those needing transportation to a doctor, hospital, etc., mows neighbors yards and becomes a “watch dog” when his neighbors are out of town.  In addition, Paul is the Neighborhood Watch Coordinator for the JerMae Neighborhood Watch Program that he initiated in October 2006 in conjunction with the Thurmont Police Department.

Lion Paul is a very dedicated and an active member of one of the largest service organizations in the world that is predominately directed at fighting to eliminate preventable and reversible blindness, as well as working on other vision-related endeavors -- the Thurmont Lions Club being one of the many clubs.

Very dear to his heart is the Pre-School Vision Screening Program.   He is a unique individual with thoughtfulness, logic and commitment.  In all of his adventures, commitments and support to others, he has leadership style, team building techniques and a desire to succeed.  He has a passion for helping people.

Lion Paul serves in many capacities: sound manager; Co-chair Loot Lotto fundraiser; Chair of Pre-School Vision Screening Program; President of the Thurmont Lions Club 2007-2008; Member of the Constitution, Bylaws and Policy committee; Member of the Make-A-Difference-Day, Volunteer of the Year, Adopt a Family and numerous other committees.  He is very instrumental in helping to re-vitalize the old trolley trail in Thurmont  and working on numerous fundraising opportunities to help residents in the Thurmont community.    Lion Paul  is Zone 1 Chair for Region III of District 22-W International Lions Club for 2008-2009.  There is only one direction for Lion Paul to go – upward, upward, upward.  He is such a valuable asset to the Thurmont Lions Club.

Lion Paul received the Lion of the Year award in 2005 after serving one year as a lion member -- this is an unusual accomplishment.  Also, he has received the highest form of recognition conferred by Lions Clubs International Foundation -- the Melvin Jones Fellowship  Award in 2007.

Lion Paul has considerable interaction with the Town of Thurmont personnel and has served on panels covering major topics of interest to the residents.

Lion Paul is a mentor in all aspects.  His volunteer work often takes him in two directions.  He frequently leads committees, but also gets his hands dirty.  The more he does for the church, community and the Thurmont Lions Club, the more he is right at home.
