Entire route was route 43 from 1931-34.

upgraded to four lanes in 1956. (Route 237 to 1 mile east of route 237
remained four lanes but undivided.)
Route 17 Before 1934:
Originally routed from Indiana state line 3 miles west of Hicksville to
Pennsylvania state line 5 miles east of Poland.
Routed along current route 2 from Indiana state line to Hicksville,
route 18 from Hicksville to Tiffin, route 100 from Tiffin to route 224,
and route 224 from route 100 to Pennsylvania state line.
Indiana state line to Tiffin certified as route 18 in 1926.
In 1926, routing west of Tiffin changed to that of current route 224.
Entire route certified as route 224 in 1934.
