History of route 18:
Original state highway.
Originally routed from Norwalk to Pennsylvania state line along current
route 18 from Norwalk to Akron, an unnumbered road from Akron to current
route 8, route 261 from route 8 to Tallmadge, an unnumbered road paralleling
route 76 from Tallmadge to Youngstown, and route 289 from Youngstown to
Pennsylvania state line.
Indiana state line to Hicksville was route 193 before 1940.
Hicksville to Tiffin was route 17 before 1926.
Tiffin to Republic was route 106 before 1926.
Republic to Bellevue was route 67 before 1926.
Bellevue to Norwalk was route 2 before 1926.
Extended to Indiana state line in 1926 along previous route 17 and
current route 2 from Indiana state line to Hicksville, previous route 17
from Hicksville to Tiffin, previous route 106 from Tiffin to Republic,
previous route 67 from Republic to Bellevue, and previous route 2 and
current route 20 from Bellevue to Norwalk.
Indiana state line to Hicksville dually certified with route 2 in 1936.
In 1940, rerouted west of Hicksville along current routing and previous
route 193.
Medina to route 21 upgraded to four lanes by 1946.
Truncated at Youngstown in 1950.
Youngstown to Pennsylvania state line certified as route 289 in 1950.
Current route 71 to route 21 (current route 77) dually certified with
route 1 from 1960-65.
By 1966, rerouted along route 8 in Akron and dually certified with
route 80S to Palmyra.
Palmyra to Lake Milton rerouted onto and dually certified with route 80S
in 1967.
Norwalk bypass added by 1969.
Truncated at route 8 in 1971.
Akron to Youngstown certified as route 80S only in 1971.
Rerouted through Akron along previous routes 176 and 8 and ended at
route 91 in 1972.
