  • Originally routed from Kentucky state line to Michigan state line along current route 23 from Kentucky state line to Waldo, route 423 from Waldo to 8 miles north of Marion, route 23 from 8 miles north of Marion to 3 miles south of Upper Sandusky, route 199 from 3 miles south of Upper Sandusky to Carey, route 23 from Carey to Fostoria, route 199 from Fostoria to Perrysburg, route 65 from Perrysburg to Toledo, and unnumbered roads from Toledo to Michigan state line.
  • Kentucky state line to Marion was route 4 before 1926.
  • Marion to Carey was route 22 before 1926.
  • Carey to Fostoria was route 63 before 1926.
  • Fostoria to 3 miles south of Lemoyne was route 199 before 1969.

  • Upper Sandusky bypass added and route upgraded to four lanes and rerouted to 1 mile south of Carey by 1966.
  • 3 miles south of Upper Sandusky to Carey certified as route 199 by 1966.
  • 6 miles north of Delaware to Waldo upgraded to divided highway in 1968.
  • Waldo to 3 miles south of Upper Sandusky upgraded to divided highway in 1969.
  • In 1969, routing from Fostoria to 2 miles south of Sylvania changed to follow that of the previous route 199 from Fostoria to 3 miles south of Lemoyne, route 20 from 3 miles south of Lemoyne to Perrysburg, route 75 for 2 miles, and route 475 from route 75 to 2 miles south of Sylvania.
