These photos were taken in July 1972 when Typhoon Rita hit the island.  Time was near 0900.  We were on "Mids", next to last day, when we heard, at 0400, that this Typhoon was turning around and coming up the middle of the island. (We were plagued by this unusual storm for over a week).  It first came up east of us, by 500km, but still putting us in Typhoon Condition 1 Caution.  It headed for Japan, but half way there it turned and came down the west side of the island again missing us by 500km.  When we thought we were clear of it, it then turned and came right up the middle (HWY-1).  I believe the reported wind gusts were up to 220mph.  The eye passed right over the island.  It was an un-real sight (perfectly clear above with a large dark wall all the around).  By the way... anyone ever try playing Typhoon Football?
