In a game of chess,
how do the pieces
compare in value?

A game of chess is not won by
accumulating points. When
trying to decide whether or
not to capture an opponent's
piece, it's helpful to know
what the normal values of
the pieces are. For example,
if you can capture a rook by
allowing your queen to be
captured, you'd probably
be making a mistake.

All these values are only
averages that apply in most,
but not all situations. For
example, if a pawn is about
to move to the last rank and
be transformed into a queen,
its value would probably be
much more than one point.

Kings cannot be exchanged.
They have infinite value.

Queen: 9 points

Rook: 5 points

Bishop: 3 points

Knight: 3 points

Pawn: 1 point
