Mitchell Caverns
Southern California

Mitchell Caverns is 60 miles west
of Needles, in Southern California's
Mojave Desert. (near Interstate 40)
In 1932 Jack Mitchell opened up
the cave for tours. Back then, it
was called Crystal Cave. Native
Americans knew about it long be-
fore Mitchell's time and called it
the "Eyes of the Mountain." The
state purchased it in 1954 and it's
now part of the State Park system.

This picture shows why the local
Native Americans called this cave
the "Eyes of the Mountain." It's
now open to the public but it's
recommended that a reservation
for a tour be made in advance.

Access to the cave is only by official
guided tour. (A locked gate prevents
unauthorized visits.)  For more infor-
mation or to make reservations, call
760 928-2586. The official web page:

www.parks.ca.gov

There are occasions when the cave is
closed, so phone before going out there.
