In 1995 I wrote that 'Kids are kids the world over. Here, I was walking back to the Nacional and spotted these school children. They, to the consternation of their teacher, started mugging for me.I love this picture. These kids are Cuba. In all of the political tumult, we often forget that it's the little guys who are caught in the middle.' In 1999, I returned to that school to give them copies of this picture. The teachers were very guarded with us and would not give us access. When we returned to the States we found out why, Elian's adventure had been unfolding while we were in Havana.
