Bloom period March through May. There is a legend about the Bluebonnet I want to share.
After a very long dry spell the "Great Spirit" told the Comanche tribe that they must sacrifice their most prized possession by offering it as a burnt offering. That night the chief's daughter slipped out and took from her skirt her beloved doll that wore the feathers of the
BlueJay. She threw the doll into the fire and watched as the flames consumed it. After the fire had died down she scooped up the ashes and turned from north to west to south and east as the ashes blew from her hands. In the morning the barren land was
covered with a blanket of blue flowers. Their land became lush and green once more and the little
Indian girl that was so unselfish was given the name of " One
Who-Loves-Her-People. And now each Spring the "Great Spirit" blesses the land with the beautiful flowers we call Bluebonnets.
