Prickly Pear Cactus

Bloom period from June thru August. This cactus puts off spines that are more trouble than most cactus. Beware. I am told that tender newly formed green pads (before spines) can be eaten in stews. They must be boiled twice and water poured out each time. The rip fruit (red) can be used in preserves. Please don't try this on my say so, I've never prepared these and never eaten them.
