Showy Primrose
Showy Primrose

Oenothera speciosa
Evening Primrose Family - Onagraceae

This flower is known to most Texans as a "Buttercup". Have you ever picked one and rubbed it on you chin to see if you boyfriend loved you.  It was suppose to leave yellow on your chin if he loved you.  Nice how that worked out each time.  This is also called:  Mexican Primrose, Fairy Flower, and Amapola.  The bloom period is from March to July and sometime come back in the fall.

It is said that fairies take shelter in the Primrose blossoms.  And Wadsworth said:

"Long as there's sun that sets
           Primroses will have their glory"
